Besides acting, Bips, as she is fondly called, did the famous video "Tu" for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat back in her early days before she became an actress. She also made a guest appearance in Jay Sean's music video Stolen.

Basu made her film debut in Abbas Mustan's Ajnabee, with Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor. She played a married woman who goes all out to woo her husband’s married friend, and eventually won the Film-fare Best Female Debut Award for her performance. Also in 2002, Basu starred in Telugu movie Takkari Donga opposite Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu and Vikram Bhatt's thriller Raaz.

In 2008 Basu starred in Race, co-starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, the film performed well at the box office, and Basu's performance was appreciated by critics. She also received good reviews for her role in Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor. She completed the year by appearing in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in the song Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte.

In 2006, Padukone made her cinematic debut in the Kannada film Aishwarya starring opposite actor Upendra. She later made a successful Bollywood debut in 2007 with Farah Khan's international hit Om Shanti Om opposite Shahrukh Khan which earned the actress a Film-fare Best Female Debut Award as well as her first Film-fare Best Actress nomination.

As the year 2009 was not pretty well for Mugdha Godse, the year 2010 seems to be better for her. Kash went on and said “Talking about myself, I get only 2-3 projects in a year but let me tell you they are substantial projects. Moreover, I'm proud that at least I don't lie like other stars do.”  She also said that “I don't want to take their names as everybody knows about them!”
